THE COMPOSITION OF THE PENCIL LEAD

The pencil lead consists of

  • graphite
  • clay
  • impregnating agents

Graphite is the colourant ingredient of the lead. Graphite provides the blackness.

Clay acts as the binding agent, giving the lead shape and strength following the firing process.

The grease/wax impregnation gives the lead additional strength, gliding quality and blackness, while improving adhesion to the writing surface.
